Cheb i Sabbah – World Music Dj

Presenter Bio:
Cheb i Sabbah—a.k.a. Dj Cheb i Sabbah, an Algerian of Babar descent, moved to Paris in the 1960s, and, more or less by accident, became a DJ. By the late 1980s, he was pushing boundaries on the dance floor, seeking ways to work African, Asian, and Arabic music into the mix. Then, as the “world music” movement unfolded, Cheb i Sabbah took the inspired step of recording traditional and classical musicians himself and using those tracks to create bold, new creations—effectively, music “composed” by a DJ.

“As a Dj, you have ears,” says Sabbah. “This is your instrument; you know what you want to hear on the dance floor. A lot of genuine world music artists are fantastic musicians, composers, vocalists, but they don't know how to master and mix for the dance floor. They are not acquainted with the technicalities of how to construct songs that are DJ-friendly with breaks or stops, so you can go from here to there.”

With four landmark recordings under his belt, Sabbah recently returned to his native North Africa to gather the raw material for his most ambitious project to date, La Kahena, a set of eight pieces created from music by eight different acts, all featuring women singers. Sabbah remains a DJ at heart, but he is also something more.

An innovator in one of the most contemporary musical realms, he is clearly committed to creating new forms. “But at the same time,” says Sabbah, “the more important focus for me is to keep the tradition alive. You take Haddarates: there aren’t many people wanting to learn this style of singing and preserve their tradition. There are only two or three Haddarates groups in Morocco at this moment. Once they go, it's over, then what?” From dance floor DJ to defender of ancient traditions, Sabbah is a true musical iconoclast and visionary on the contemporary scene.

DJ Cheb i Sabbah now enjoys a worldwide reputation as a magician of the dance floor, from the crowded confines of New York’s Knitting Factory, to nightclubs in his adopted home, San Francisco, to the likes of L.A.’s massive Getty Center, with its capacity of 4500. On stage, he improvises his show using pre-composed tracks and massive, projected visuals, interwoven and juxtaposed as the spirit moves him.

In 1996 with 12 years of age through the album Daft Punk @ Homework (Virgin) fall by the electronic music and in sequence, was the interest to mix tracks, listenning the CD mixes from Club Mix 96 with Josh Wink, Todd Terry, Everything But The Girl (Polygram).

Since then develops regularly with various collaborators, projects of importance to the culture of electronic music in Brazil and other countries. In October 2003, launched one of the label more exponent, URBR underground records URBR Brazil, 100% specialized, and has already launched in different formats hundreds of producers in Brazil and International Affairs, CDs, vinyl and mp3 releases.

In July 2005, starts its own events and also artistic direction in dozens of events. Always with great DJs, new talent and established. Since November 2005 until the present day, colonizing countries of Europe and the Americas, through annual tours with sets featuring unique and exclusive producers of Brazil, disseminating the URBR and loyal followers. Alongside his fellow DJ friends back in the early 90s, Remy Irwan pioneered what today has become a scene that is so strong and diverse in Indonesia; they introduced the underground sound to the Indonesian scene. As the first underground dance club [B1] in Jakarta opens, he was naturally appointed its resident. Infusing deep house, tribal, progressive and techno in his sets, he played an important part in spearheading the sound that today are being played in clubs in Indonesia. Taking years to finally get to what everyone knows today, Remy Irwan has had his first hand experiences on witnessing how the Indonesian scene is evolving, as a big number of clubs opens and closes, where he had been the resident for some of them.

Finally in 2002, he joined Embassy as they opened their doors for the first time. From then on, he witnessed how the scene was getting even bigger and bigger, as Jakarta started being considered as one of the key players in the dance scene development throughout Asia. After years of witnessing and experiencing a great number of talented international artists coming in and out, and sharing his booth in Embassy with renowned world DJs like Satoshi Tomiie, James Zabiella, Louie Vega, Blank & Jones, Mistress Barbara, Christian Smith, Smokin Jo, and Derrick May to name but a few, also with international appearances at parties such as “We Love Sundays @ Space” in Ibiza alongside Felix Da Housecat, DjSneak, Groove Armada and Tiefschwarz...It is now his time to take on the world, be prepared! Funky Gong is Minoru Tsunoda. Since the 80’s he was the vocalist and guitarist of an alternative rock band which lead him to becoming the guitarist in an electro-rock unit JOUJOUKA with DJ Tsuyoshi in 1998. Around the same time he was also djing and has played at every big event going including Fuji Rock and he has also played amazing sets for 2 years running on Bali Island at New Years Eve parties. As an artist he is innovative and constantly evolving. Since around 2004 he began incorporating his guitar playing in his DJ sets and tries to explore new musical territory in real time. People love him and his funky electro sound in the clubs and parties here in Japan. He is constantly busy with making tracks and doing remixes for his own solo project as well as for projects with Joujouka. He released one of his solo tracks TAKE IT TO THE FIRE, worldwide on the Tsuyoshi’s local MAD SKIPPERS label in 2004 under the artist name Minoru. In 2007 he released BURNING feat. Ninjarette under the name Funky Gong with other releases and a solo album in the pipeline. He is one to watch.

In the beginning of 2009 two best friend whose grew up together since 2004 - Theo “ Morri “ & Alvie “ Alph “ - decided to make a new project ( Ableton Live set and exclussive back2back dj set ) called “ Morri & Alph “.They started spinning professionally from 2005 and has shared with many of his fellow local Djs.Namely in parties for clubs at Jakarta,Bandung,Jogja, Bali and live at Paranoia Hard Rock FM.Their set is best described minimal and techno with touches of deep & dark electronica mixed with dirty german electro sound ( Fully distortion ).They got this eccentric unique sounds to the tip of their fingers whenever their behind the deck,and that promises the crowd on a unique journey with twitchy blips here and there.
